Hazardous Materials General Awareness Transportation Training

This hazmat general awareness training course provides foundational training in the federal hazardous materials transportation regulations found in 49 CFR. Designed for hazmat employees at all levels, it covers the history and legal basis of the regulations, DOT enforcement and penalties, material classification, packaging requirements, communication standards including markings, labels, and shipping papers, and basic emergency response procedures. Upon completion, employees will be able to identify their responsibilities under federal law and recognize key compliance requirements at every stage of the transportation process.

Materials Provided

Examination

Participants must achieve a passing score of 80% or better on a written examination to successfully complete the course. There is no test-out option — all participants are required to complete both the training and the examination, consistent with DOT recurrent training requirements under 49 CFR 172, Subpart H.

Record Keeping

Participants who successfully complete the hazmat general awareness training course receive a certificate of training documenting that the training meets the requirements of 49 CFR 172, Subpart H. Your hazmat employer is responsible for maintaining your training records, including the certification date — which determines when your recurrent training is due, on a three-year, day-for-day basis. Certificates will be delivered electronically.

There is no abbreviated refresher course — recurrent training means completing the full course again to ensure your knowledge of current regulations remains up to date.
